Recent graduates and current photography students from the University of the West of England exhibit at The Searchers Contemporary, St Michaels Hill, from Sun 24 Feb until Sat 2 Mar 2013.

Discontinued is the second exhibition organized by this group of Bristol based photographers, displaying selected works of recent graduates and current photography students from the University of the West of England. The exhibition previews on Sunday 24th February and runs until Saturday 2nd March at The Searchers Contemporary at 14 St Michaels Hill in Bristol.

Following the first exhibition ‘MONO-C’ last autumn in the Bristol Arts Quarter on Christmas Steps, this group of upcoming artists continues to pursue the aim of endorsing contemporary photography by obtaining consistent exhibiting opportunities of previously unseen work. Unlike the previous monochrome exhibition, ‘Discontinued’ will introduce colour work – choosing different subject matter from still life and portrait to landscape, each pursuing their own individual style, all photographers reflect the quiet stillness of the surrounding world expressed in the subtle tonality of imagery.

Preview: Sunday 24 February, 2-5pm

How do we respond to images of our world?
To places we’ve never been, to people we’ve never seen?
Can we feel the pain of others?
Or do we choose not to?

Pictures at an Exhibition has been created by the 16-25 year old members of the Bristol Old Vic Young Company, and is accompanied by and devised from an exhibition of twenty photographs that represent the world today and have been chosen by the company. Inspired by press photography, journalism and news reporting, the pictures in their gallery include the inspirational, the mundane, the uplifting and the distressing. Each picture has been presented by a performer, and through speech and physical theatre, together they will take a stand for the pictures which move, provoke and drive them.

Directed by John Retallack (FairyMonsterGhost, 2011; Good Clown Bad Clown, 2011) and with choreography by Champloo Dance Company (White Caps, 2010), Pictures at an Exhibition is the award-winning Bristol Old Vic Young Company’s most accomplished dance and physical theatre production yet.

Tiny tales of adventure in a sun-soaked technicolour dreamland. Photographs by Sarah Macfarlane, showing at Philadelphia Street from Tues 9 - Sun 14 Oct 2012.

Tuesday 9 – Sunday 14 October 2012
Philadelphia Street

Tiny tales of adventure in a sun-soaked technicolour dreamland.

Sarah Macfarlane’s photographs combine disconcerting tableaux, vibrant colours and subtle biographical detail. Underpinned by a dark undercurrent of surreality, uncomposed moments attain a dream-like resonance. Using unconventional processes, Sarah reveals a fantasy world; a world closely resembling our own, but a little bit brighter, a little bit hazier, a little bit weirder.

As the days draw in, we’re all looking for an escape; Sarah Macfarlane’s hyper-saturated reality will help keep away the chill.

Opening party: Tuesday 9 October 6-9pm

EXHIBITION: Soomin Leong – Traverse

21st June – 21st July at The Gallimaufry

In this series of work, Soomin uses the process of printing as an idea. From the plate to the print, the image has travelled and been through changes. Footprints are prints or traces that are left by human or animals. The accumulation of footprints creates a footpath after a period of time. From vague footprints, slowly they become clearer and mark the land. Therefore, the footprints have travelled and are changing constantly.

Thom Bleasdale’s photography and sculpture draw from a deeply personal view of the world. Early life experience with illness and isolation led Thom to explore notions of life and death and that in accepting this a sense of calm and peace overcomes fear and transforms.
