Take a photo of your favourite building or open space in Bristol to win a photography course - closing date: 16 June.

The Civic Day is a new initiative when civic societies across England invite people to celebrate their area and discover more about where they live. To celebrate Civic Day 2012 in Bristol, Bristol Civic Society are holding a photography competition in the city, with the theme I love Bristol because…

“We want to encourage members of the public to take a photo of their favourite building or open space in Bristol, and to send this to us. We believe that this will allow us to engage with a variety of people, from young to old. The outcome will be a visual catalogue of what people in Bristol feel it is important to improve or protect for future generations.”

The best of these photographs will be awarded prizes, based on creativity, imagination and originality. Photography Made Simple have kindly donated prizes of a one day photography course at Ashton Court for each category winner, and 1-2-1 tuition for the overall competition winner.

All entrants will have the opportunity for their photograph to be showcased at the Civic Day event, to be held at Bristol’s Bearpit in the city centre on Saturday 23 June. Members of the public are encouraged to come and view the photograph submissions, and to attend the event, where there will be many activities and stalls for people to enjoy.

Closing date: 16 June 2012

Competition Rules

The competition is open to individual interpretation

Entries should be submitted with your name, the photograph title, your email address and telephone number.

Entries should be submitted via Twitter, Facebook or email – bristolcivicday@live.co.uk

All entries must be the original work of the entrant and must not infringe the rights of any other party. The entrant must be the sole owner of the copyright in all photographs entered and must have obtained permission of any people featured in entries prior to submission.

By entering the competition all entrants grant Bristol Civic Society the right to publish and exhibit their photographs on the Bristol Civic Society website and other promotional material.

By entering, entrants will be deemed to have agreed to be bound by these rules and Bristol Civic Society reserve the right to exclude entries from the competition at any time if it is believed an entrant has breached these rules.

Bristol Civic Society reserves the right to cancel this competition or alter any of the rules at any stage.

Documenting life and culture across the world: TalkPhoto explores the critical role played by photographers. Thursday 12 April, 7pm at Hamilton House.

Documenting life and culture across the world: TalkPhoto explores the critical role played by photographers

Thursday 12 April, 7pm
Hamilton House, Stokes Croft, Bristol

The importance of photography as a means of documenting different aspects of life and culture around the world – and improving people’s understanding of major issues – comes into sharp focus at April’s TalkPhoto event at Hamilton House, 80 Stokes Croft, Bristol, on Thursday, April 12th

Serving Lance Corporal Tim Jones will present his striking images of life on the streets of Kabul taken during the conflict in Afghanistan while Simon Caplan will talk about his recent work to record the efforts of a small number of highly skilled craftspeople as they struggle to revive traditional industries and crafts here in England. The evening will also include a screening of ‘Leaving Dublin’, an audio-visual piece by Irish photographer David Monahan.

Bristol-born Lance Corporal Tim Jones’s talk ‘My tour of duty: Afghanistan in pictures’ will feature images that he took in Kabul whilst accompanying VIPs around the city, patrolling the local streets and compounds and helping the Afghan people build a better country for themselves. His unique photographs give an intimate view of soldiers and locals in Afghanistan not normally seen on TV or in the papers. Tim joined the army in 2005 to travel the world and served in Iraq in 2007. He is currently serving with 3 (United Kingdom) Division and Signal Squadron based in Bulford, Wiltshire. Recently back from Kabul, he is planning to become a full-time time professional Army photographer. More of his work can be seen online at www.jonesmrjones.co.uk

Inspired by the work of the legendary industrial photographer Maurice Bloomfield and contemporary photographers such as Scotland’s Chris Frear and Cornwall’s Paul Felix, Simon Caplan set out to photograph craftspeople considered to be amongst the last of their kind in England. In his talk ‘Surviving, Reviving, Thriving’. he will outline the challenges of photographing busy craftworkers in messy, cramped environments and will offer photographers advice on preparing for this kind of environmental portrait photography. Simon, a Licentiate of the Royal Photographic Society, is currently completing a new project: ‘An Extra Shot’ – exploring the photographic opportunities offered by the world of coffee roasting, serving and drinking. He is best known for his colourful urban and architectural abstracts and ‘found’ still life images. His solo exhibition ‘Hidden Harbourside’ can be seen aboard The Grain Barge off Hotwells Road, Bristol throughout April 2012. More of his work can be viewed online at www.simoncaplanphotography.co.uk

‘Leaving Dublin’ by Irish photographer David Monahan is a series of heroic portraits of people about to emigrate from Ireland in search of better prospects, and is the photographer’s personal reaction to the re-establishment of emigration as a major part of Irish cultural identity. These portraits were all taken at night, in and around Dublin, just before his subjects emigrated - young graduates, unemployed tradesmen, couples, families with children and a handful of people in their 40s and 50s. The project has been widely reported in the international media, and its TalkPhoto screening is following on from several worldwide screenings on St Patrick’s Day. davidmonahan.viewbook.com

After the two talks (and a visit to the bar), there will be a chance for attendees to share and talk about their own work or that of photographers or photographs that inspire or interest them

There’s a small entrance charge of £3 (£2 for Second Look members) to cover the cost of room hire and publicity. The evening starts at 7pm.

TalkPhoto is staged by the city’s Second Look photography group and is designed to enable Bristol’s growing community of photographers to learn from successful and innovative photographers and to share ideas and improve their skills. Details of how to participate in the evenings can be found on the Second Look website at www.secondlook.org.uk

>>> Do you feel you have a solid photographic technique, a unique artistic style or an interesting philosophy? If so, do you want to be considered as a future speaker for these events? Please email a paragraph about what you want to talk about and the photograph that illustrates it best, plus your website or Flickr photostream address if you have one, to Michael Reeves at contact@michaelreevesphotography.com
